DISINFO: 10 years ago the West turned Ukraine into a weapon against Russia

SUMMARY

Exactly 10 years ago, Ukraine was definitely turned into a Western weapon against Russia. Literally, a weapon of war. A coup in Kyiv imposed a puppet government by Washington and Brussels, who did not hide their role in putting radical anti-Russian forces in power. Today the only freedom that Ukrainians have is to be sent to the frontline to die in a war seen as a good “investment” by their allies.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about Ukraine, the Maidan protests and encircling or destabilising Russia. All these allegations have been repeatedly debunked (see for example here, here, here and here).

By falsely portraying events in Ukraine in 2014 as a Western-led anti-Russian operation, this disinformation story aims to justify Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its brutal invasion of Ukraine in 2022 as “defensive” actions, thus exonerating Russia of any responsibility.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Russia only wants to end the war started by Ukraine in 2014, that the West created an anti-Russian and neo-Nazi Ukraine, that the 2014 US-backed Euromaidan coup triggered the Donbas war, or that Euromaidan protesters were trained and paid by the West.
