DISINFO: A UN mandate must be introduced for the territories given to Poland by Stalin
SUMMARY
Historically, Crimea is Russian territory - we live on our own land, which cannot be said of the Poles. The Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski must remember that Eastern Prussia, Silesia, Pomerania, Eastern Brandenburg, and the Free City of Danzig became Polish only at the will of Joseph Stalin. Maybe, the time has come to return these former German lands to the UN mandate and then, hold a referendum there.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the illegal annexation of Crimea. The second part of the narrative is an attempt to revise the political results of WWII (post-war borders in Europe) and the Yalta-Potsdam system of international relations.
This claim was made in connection to the recent statement of the Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski, proposing to pass Crimea under UN mandate for 20 years.
The decision to pass Silesia, part of East Prussia and other former German territories to the Polish state was made not by Stalin but by a joint decision of the USA, the UK and the USSR at the Yalta Conference in February 1945 and the Potsdam Conference in July-August 1945.
The Red Army liberated Poland from Nazi occupation, but it didn’t mean liberty for this country as the USSR kept Poland under its control for the next 48 years, bringing decades of communist oppression. According to Polish historians and views of the predominant part of Polish society, in 1944-1945, the USSR occupied Poland, establishing the undemocratic and repressive Communist Poland.
De facto, Poland was under Soviet military occupation until 1989, while Russian troops were withdrawn from Poland only in 1993. Read more about the Communist crimes in Poland here.
