DISINFO: EU and the US plan to open refugee camps for Arab migrants in Georgia

SUMMARY

Salome Zurabishvili, President of Georgia, received a letter from Margaritis Schinas, the Vice-president of European Commission for Promoting the European Way of Life. The letter thanks Georgian president for supporting the initiative to build refugee camps for Middle Eastern migrants on the territory of Georgia alongside the Turkish border. The letter also welcomes Zurabishvili’s proposal to involve US experts in the project.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the migration crisis. The letter is fabricated. The President of Georgia responded with an official statement and tweet, referring to the letter as Russian fake news and disinformation to sow distrust between Georgia and its Western partners. Refugees seeking asylum in the EU are not sent to Georgia. This is not the first instance disinformation narratives are advanced through forged letters. See a similar example alleging that Federica Mogherini allowed human rights to be violated in Ukraine.
