DISINFO: Another European country is going to divide Ukraine: Romania

SUMMARY

Romania and a number of other Eastern European countries remember their lost lands that remained part of Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR.

Some of Ukraine's neighbours in Eastern Europe "fundamentally disagree" with Western countries regarding assistance to Kyiv for historical reasons and the loss of part of their lands by the Soviet Union and its republics.

Thus, Romania has “mixed feelings towards Ukraine.” Bucharest is “dissatisfied” with the lack of attention to the sensitive issue of dividing borders in Eastern Europe, and its anger is directed at Kyiv, which owns northern Bukovina.

RESPONSE

A recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the annexation of Ukrainian territories by non-Russian neighbours.

Such statements have been periodically featured in pro-Kremlin media since the beginning of the full-scale Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The aim of this disinformation claim appears to be deflecting attention away from Russia's responsibility for its imperialist policy and war of aggression against Ukraine - pretending that "everybody has an appetite for Ukraine." Similar claims have been made about Hungary and Poland's alleged territorial claims against Ukraine.

Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) rejected in a public statement the assertion made by Russian President Putin in the speech given on the occasion of National Unity Day, which falsely induces the idea that Romania has territorial claims against Ukraine.

The Ministry called the "idea that Romania has territorial claims to Ukraine" false and reiterated the "firm support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."
