DISINFO: Baltic countries are hurting their own interests by imposing sanctions on Russia
SUMMARY
The Baltic states' additional sanctions against Russia undermine their national interests and are turning from Russophobia into Balticophobia.
The Baltic states have cut themselves off from the resource base, the export market, technology exchange, and scientific and humanitarian cooperation. Maybe they have produced something or made some scientific discovery while feeding on this destructive ideology because there are cases like this: a country follows a destructive ideology but achieves something. However, in these countries, there are no achievements.
RESPONSE
This claim represents multiple pro-Kremlin disinformation claims aimed at portraying the Baltic states as irrational and self-destructive for imposing sanctions on Russia.
Baltic countries have acted in line with their national interests and international obligations by supporting EU sanctions in response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
The Baltic states support for sanctions is based on their regional security, respect for rule of law, and democratic values. Their close proximity to Russia makes them more vulnerable to its unprovoked aggression. Moreover, the Baltic states' long history of Soviet occupation and direct exposure to Kremlin disinformation and hybrid threats makes them additionally sensitive to the risks posed by Russian aggression.
The Baltic states reduction of their Russian energy and trade dependence did not lead to their isolation. On the contrary, they have successfully reoriented their energy supply toward coordinated EU demand of natural gas-and in the future hydrogen-as part of the REPowerEU Plan, enhancing integration, resilience and independence. Their economies became more fully integrated with the EU single market, one of the largest in the world.
In addition, the claim that the Baltic states have achieved “nothing” is simply false. Just to name a few examples, Estonia is recognized as a global digital pioneer, known for its digital governance and cybersecurity innovations. Lithuania has become a regional SME innovation and fintech hub, and Latvia invests in knowledge based bioeconomics, biomedicine, medical technologies, advanced materials, and smart energy.
See similar cases that the Baltic states’ fears of Russia are groundless, that the Baltic states trade Russophobia for financial assistance of the US and EU, that the Baltic States and Poland are the main provocateurs of Russophobia in Europe, that Russophobia and neo-Nazism the norm in the Baltic states and Ukraine, and that Russophobia is the basic ideology of politicians in the Baltic states.
