DISINFO: From carnival to civil war: Belarus is only a step away

SUMMARY

The main result of the protests in Belarus is that the “angry townspeople” were imperceptibly brought to the line beyond which lies the darkness of civil massacre. This stage of “colour revolutions” is called the desacralisation of power – when the guards of law are moulded (not without their participation) into an image of the enemy. The Telegram channel NEXTA was both a coordinator, an ideologue, and a provocateur here. And now it openly directs the crowd to clashes.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Belarus and colour revolutions. The protests in Belarus erupted to contest the results of the presidential election in Belarus on the 9th of August, which are considered fraudulent by a large part of Belarusian society. The European Union has also stated that the elections were neither free nor fair. There is no evidence that people in Belarus are being lead to civil war through Telegram channels. The statement, published by the human rights centre Viasna, notes that the protests of citizens, caused by distrust of the announced results of the presidential elections in Belarus, were peaceful and did not pose a threat to either national or public security. See similar cases claiming that the protests in Belarus are a colour revolution conducted according to a Maidan scenario and that the West wants to prepare Maidan in Belarus.
