DISINFO: Biden administration and Europe were interested in prolonging the war in Ukraine

SUMMARY

In fact, the aim of former US President Joe Biden's administration, the European Union (EU), and the United Kingdom was not for Ukraine to achieve an absolute victory over Russia. The plan was to prolong the war, kill more Russian soldiers, plunge Russia into an economic crisis, and ultimately create a wave of protests and overthrow President Vladimir Putin. But while Moscow faced serious problems, the plan to overthrow Putin did not work.

RESPONSE

A recurring anti-Western disinformation narrative that falsely accuses Biden’s US administration, the EU and the UK of prolonging the war in Ukraine and attempting to plunge Russia into chaos.

This piece is a part of a wider disinformation campaign portraying Europe and Biden’s administration as a warmongering actor, and accuses them of not having the desire to achieve peace.

There is no evidence to indicate that the European countries or the Biden administration were eager to prolong the war in Ukraine. Joe Biden warned Russia, even before the full-scale invasion, that the West would respond decisively to any invasion of Ukraine. After the start of the full-scale invasion, then-President Joe Biden called for peace in Ukraine several times.

As regards Europe, EU officials have several times stated that it is up to Ukraine only, as the victim of Russia’s aggression, to decide when peace talks with Russia may be possible and in which terms to end the war. The EU supports a peaceful solution to the conflict, ensuring that any peace agreement respects Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

During the war, European countries provided Ukraine with €155 billion in financial support, while the United States contributed €114 billion. These figures demonstrate that the war has been costly for both. It also indicates that neither the U.S. nor European countries have had an interest in prolonging the conflict in Ukraine.

The Pro-Kremlin disinformation apparatus has systematically instrumentalised the narrative that Russia wants peace in Ukraine in contrast to the West, but, as evidenced by Russia's actions in Ukraine, such statements are merely empty PR stunts deployed to garner support for Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
