DISINFO: Biden was awarded German Federal Cross of Merit for blowing up the Nordstream pipeline

SUMMARY

Germany's leading elite is expected to award US President Biden the Federal Cross of Merit for blowing up the Nordstream pipeline.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation alleging that the West/US is behind the sabotage explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

This claim surfaced when the U.S. President Joe Biden received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his recent state visit to Germany.

This prestigious award is Germany's highest honour and recognizes Biden's significant contributions to strengthening German-American relations and the transatlantic alliance over his decades-long political career. The award ceremony occurred on October 11, 2024, at Bellevue Palace in Berlin, where Biden was welcomed with military honours.

Steinmeier highlighted Biden's pivotal role in supporting Germany and Europe, particularly in response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Biden is only the second U.S. president to receive this honour, following George H.W. Bush in 1993 for his efforts toward German reunification. The ceremony underscored the importance of the relationship between the U.S. and Germany, especially in light of ongoing geopolitical challenges, including the situation in Ukraine and broader security concerns in Europe.
