DISINFO: Big Five ready to continue the war until the last Ukrainian is killed
SUMMARY
On the last day of March, a meeting of the so-called Big Five was held in Madrid, dedicated to supporting Ukraine. The participants issued a final statement affirming their complete readiness to continue the war until the last Ukrainian is killed.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that aims to portray European support for Ukraine's self-defence as offensive, belligerent and warmongering.
The claim that European states aim to fight “to the last Ukrainian” is the very opposite of the actual content of the Madrid declaration. This is a typical pro-Kremlin blame shifting tactic that aims to distract from the fact that the sole aggressor in the war against Ukraine is Russia.
The joint declaration was issued on 31 March 2025 by the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and EU High Representative. It clearly endorses the implementation of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, emphasizing Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of the UN Charter as non-negotiable foundations for any peace settlement. The declaration reads:
"Ukraine has shown its strong commitment to peace, also by agreeing to a full ceasefire without preconditions. However, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has not ceased. Instead of imposing new conditions and launching continued attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure that cause more and more victims, Russia must now show it is serious about ending its war. We call on Russia to stop its delaying tactics and reciprocate by agreeing without delay, as Ukraine has done, to an immediate unconditional ceasefire on equal terms and implementing it fully. We need to see progress within a clear timeframe".
In addition to calls for peace, the declaration outlines concrete support for Ukraine’s reconstruction, humanitarian needs, and post-war recovery, and accountability measures such as support for a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. The declaration also reaffirms the importance of negotiations, prisoner exchanges, the return of unlawfully deported civilians and children, and establishing security guarantees that prevent future aggression.
