DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: Bin Laden's death was a staged theatrical play

SUMMARY

What happened in Abbottabad [bin Laden's death] is a theatrical play organised by the United States in order to save its face in front of the international community and American citizens. Nothing confirms that bin Laden was there at that moment.

RESPONSE

An unfounded claim that was neither counterbalanced nor critically challenged in the article.

Bin Laden was announced dead on 2 May 2011 and has since not been seen by anyone. The summer before his death, the CIA began to focus on bin Laden's compound after years of painstaking effort to penetrate a small network of couriers with ties to the al-Qaeda leader. Once the most important of those couriers led them to the Abbottabad compound, the conspicuous nature of the complex sent up alarms that it might have been built for bin Laden himself. The operation to kill bin Laden was then executed by the US Navy SEALs using a team of two dozen commandos.

Other similar claims involving bin Laden from the database include: Clinton invited Bin Laden to the White House; Bin Laden never claimed responsibility for 9/11; Edward Snowden says that Osama Bin Laden is alive.
