DISINFO: Britain supports the Muslim Brotherhood
SUMMARY
The British government has historically supported the Muslim Brotherhood and now provides a safe haven for many of its leaders and uses them to pressure some governments.
The terrorism will not stop as long as Britain is carrying out these actions. Britain must now be firmer, as the United States was, or as Russia did in Chechnya and the Caucasus.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative about Western countries being supportive of terrorist groups. The claim that the UK has historically supported the Muslim Brotherhood is completely baseless. In 2015, the UK government published a review of the Muslim Brotherhood' activities, and the findings were far from indicating any support for the group.
Some of the findings of the report include that "senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood routinely use virulent, anti-Semitic language", and that although they have engaged politically where possible, "they have also selectively used violence and sometimes terror in pursuit of their institutional goals".
One of the many conclusions of the official review is that "aspects of Muslim Brotherhood ideology and tactics, in this country and overseas, are contrary to [British] values and have been contrary to [British] national interests and [British] national security."
