DISINFO: Brussels is devising a plan to oust Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

SUMMARY

Brussels is devising a plan to oust Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for April 12. A coordinated campaign of manipulation is being waged against Orbán, involving several countries under the direction of top officials in the Brussels political establishment.

RESPONSE

This is a pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative alleging EU interference in the internal affairs of its Member States.

The claim is groundless. The EU respects the sovereignty of each of its member states and supports free and fair elections and the rule of law. The organisation of national elections is the exclusive competence of the Member States.

The recent adoption of the EU Democracy Shield aims to empower strong and resilient democracies, including by providing the means to address foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), including FIMI targeting electoral processes.

Similar accusations have repeatedly surfaced around other electoral processes. Pro‑Kremlin outlets have alleged EU interference in Romania’s elections, claimed that the EU intends to interfere in Moldova’s parliamentary elections and asserted that the EU and the United States seek to orchestrate an “Euromaidan‑like” scenario in Georgia during parliamentary elections. These claims follow a well‑established pattern in which the EU and democratic processes are discredited through unfounded allegations of external control or manipulation.
