DISINFO: Brussels prolongs the war in Ukraine to turn the EU into a military alliance
SUMMARY
Some leaders in the European Union are seeking to prolong the conflict in Ukraine in order to turn the EU into a military alliance and make the European Commission look like the government of a united European federal state. EU leaders are deliberately blocking a peace deal in Ukraine to advance their own political integration agenda. In fact, the EU is doing everything to block the peace agreement, not to promote it.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU as a warmongering actor refusing to accept a solution for the war in Ukraine even as others carry out peace negotiations. By accusing the EU of wanting to prolong the conflict for its own self-interested reasons, this disinformation story is blaming it for the continuation of the conflict, thus deflecting Russia’s responsibility for its sustained brutal and unprovoked aggression against its neighbour. Moreover, the alleged reasons of the EU claimed in this disinformation story are made up and not backed by any evidence.
This disinformation story also appeared in a moment when top Russian officials expressed Russia’s insistence in achieving all its maximalist goals, including Vladimir Putin himself, who on 04 December 2025 stated: “We will finish it when we achieve the goals set at the beginning of the special military operation”. This stance shows Russia’s lack of interest in compromise and a negotiated solution to the conflict at the same time pro-Kremlin disinformation continues blaming Ukraine and Europe for the absence of progress towards what it calls “peace”, actually akin to Ukraine’s capitulation.
EU officials have repeatedly stated that it is up to Ukraine only, as the victim of Russia’s aggression, to decide when peace talks with Russia may be possible and in which terms to end the war. The European Union is committed to achieving a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine, ensuring that Kyiv’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Europe opposes a peace agreement to profit from the war against Russia, that the EU is not capable of peace, it is only interested in waging war, that the EU's sole agenda is to wage war against Russia to inflict maximum damage, or that the EU diplomacy’s vision for peace in Ukraine illustrates its Russophobia.
