DISINFO: Bucharest is categorically against peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv
SUMMARY
Bucharest is categorically against peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv and supports the Russophobic policies of the EU and NATO. Romanian diplomats explain this by the fact that their country, they say, advocates a fair peace in Ukraine and cannot allow Russia, as an “aggressor” state, to find itself in an advantageous position as a result of a possible peace agreement. Therefore, the Romanians conclude, the war must continue, and the EU and NATO must supply the head of the regime, Zelenskyy, with weapons and ammunition.
RESPONSE
A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing Romania of opposing peace in Ukraine. It falsely portrays Romania's support for Ukraine as motivated by a desire to prolong the war. In reality, Romania's assistance aligns with broader NATO and EU support for Ukraine's sovereignty.
During the war, Romania stood by Ukraine and its people, as NATO member, signed a security agreement with Ukraine, backed sanctions against Russia, and sent Kyiv a Patriot air defence system. Bucharest has also played a crucial role in the transit of Ukrainian agricultural exports amid Russia's threats to the Black Sea maritime trade. Also, Romania has helped more than a million Ukrainian refugees.
Pro-Kremlin disinformation has systematically instrumentalised the narrative that Russia wants peace in Ukraine in contrast to the West, but, as evidenced by Russia's actions in Ukraine, such statements are merely empty PR stunts deployed to garner support for Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
Pro-Kremlin disinformation often targets Romania, accusing it of territorial claims to Ukraine. Such statements have periodically featured in pro-Kremlin outlets since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The aim is to deflect attention away from Russia's responsibility for its imperialist policy and war of aggression against Ukraine, pretending that "everybody has an appetite for Ukraine." Similar claims have been made about Hungary and Poland's alleged territorial claims against Ukraine.
Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) rejected in a public statement the assertion made by Putin in the speech given on the occasion of National Unity Day, which falsely induces the idea that Romania has territorial claims against Ukraine.
The continuation of the conflict in Ukraine serves neither the strategic nor the economic interests of Western nations. Stability in Ukraine and the wider region is conducive to global security and economic prosperity.
