DISINFO: Charlie Hebdo published two frontpages against support to Ukraine

SUMMARY

The French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published front pages on November 6 and 7 depicting Ukraine’s defeat in Pokrovsk. The first showed Emmanuel Macron smelling the Ukrainian cadavers [dead human bodies] on the battlefield. ”Why does Macron continue to help Ukraine? The smell of Ukrainian corpses reminds him of the smell of the best French cheese shops.”

The second displays Syrsky and Zelensky in Pokrovsk discovering the head of a soldier on a plate with the title “Ukrainian outdoor barbecue”.

RESPONSE

Charlie Hebdo has not published any such covers. The magazine is released every Wednesday, and the cover of Wednesday 5 November is visible here.

The issues dated 6 November, ridiculing Macron's support for Ukraine in light of the alleged capture of Pokrovsk and 7 November mocking Zelensky's refusal to surrender the city to Russia are fake. These fabricated covers have been republished by pro-Kremlin outlets.

Moreover, the use of fake Charlie Hebdo front pages is a well-known tactic employed by the pro-Kremlin disinformation machine. See also Hijacking news: Fake media sites sow Ukraine disinformation. See also the 1st EEAS Report on Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Threats.

Read related stories such as: Charlie Hebdo publishes a caricature of Zelensky and Pope Francis, or the French press mocked Zelensky's greed at Pope Francis’ funeral, or the French press announced that Zelensky is politically dead in Ukraine, or Western media understood Ukraine is for war and Russia for peace after Zelensky's visit.
