DISINFO: China declared Crimea is Russia, Ukraine is not a country

SUMMARY

Crimea was at the very beginning Russian. It was Khrushchev who gave Crimea to Ukraine in the days of the Soviet Union.

As for the sovereignty of the countries of the former USSR: they have no effective status in international law because there is no international agreement to concretise their status as sovereign countries.

The Chinese ambassador's statement was a cold shower for the hotheads in the West who are in a feverish anti-Russian delirium. The leaders of all the major powers of the world are well aware that the return of the peninsula to Russia was a just historical step based on democratic will.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation message about Crimea and the Sovereignty of Ukraine as well as all former USSR members.

PRC Ambassador to France, Lu Shaye made statements on TV channel LCI on 21 April 2023 that raised concern around the world. The statements were corrected by Lu Shaye's own ministry in Beijing:

Asked if China stood behind the envoy’s remarks, the foreign ministry’s spokesperson Mao Ning said China had been one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with former Soviet states.
“The Chinese side respects the status of the member states as sovereign states after the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Mao said, adding that on the issue of territorial sovereignty, Beijing’s position was consistent and clear.
China respects the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries and upholds the purposes and principles of the United Nations charter, she said, describing the country’s stance on Ukraine as objective and fair.

Very few countries ( 7 out of 192 according to Sputnik itself) around the globe recognise Russian annexation of Crimea and no major power does.

No international body has recognised the so-called Crimea referendum, announced on 27 February 2014, and held on 16 March 2014. On 27 March 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in which it stated that the referendum in Crimea was not valid and could not serve as a basis for any change in the status of the peninsula. On 17 December 2018, the UN General Assembly confirmed its non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea.

The European Union does not recognise and continues to strongly condemn this violation of international law, which remains a challenge to the international security order. In response to the illegal annexation of Crimea, the EU has imposed restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. In June 2021, the European Council decided to renew the sanctions introduced in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation until 23 June 2022.
