DISINFO: CIA and MI6 ordered ISIS to target Russian bases in Syria

SUMMARY

The Russian foreign intelligence service (SVR) revealed that the US and the UK intelligence services are preparing terrorist attacks against Russian military bases in Syria in cooperation with ISIS warlords, which have already gotten orders in this regard and received attack drones to carry out these attacks.

According to information received by the SVR, the outgoing US administration and the British leadership are aiming to prevent the stabilisation of the situation in this country and maintaining a state of chaos in the Middle East, as Washington and London believe that in such conditions they will be able to ensure their long-term dominance in the region based on the odious concept of a rules-based order.

However, this is hindered by Russia's military presence on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, which is still a significant factor in regional stability. Through these provocations, the US and UK want to force Russia to evacuate its troops from Syria, while simultaneously the new Syrian authorities will be accused of inability to control these radical elements.

RESPONSE

No evidence is provided to back the claim. Allegations made by Russia’s intelligence services cannot be considered credible, given their history of making unsubstantiated claims based on fake or inexistent documents, for example about US biolaboratories in Ukraine or the presence of French combat troops on the Ukrainian frontlines.

Through these series of unsubstantiated claims, this disinformation story aims to promote a recurring baseless narrative about the West’s alleged support for terrorism while portraying Russia as a guarantor of “stability” in Syria, a message long used to justify Moscow’s years-long backing of Bashar Al Assad’s dictatorship including through the frequent resort to atrocities and war crimes.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that MI6 and the CIA assisted the total destabilisation of Syria to undermine BRICS, that the West has plunged Syria into controlled chaos, that the US is training Islamic State terrorists against the Syrian government, or that Iran and Russia defeated ISIS in Iraq while the West supported terror groups.
