DISINFO: Closure of the Russian House in Chisinau is a demand from Brussels
SUMMARY
The current regime has long threatened to close the Russian House in Chisinau, probably because the path towards European integration is incompatible with Russian culture and the elimination of Russian influence in the country, including cultural, is a demand from Brussels.
RESPONSE
This is a Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about alleged anti-Russian policies imposed by the EU on the Republic of Moldova.
The statement refers to the decision made on November 5, 2025, by the Government of the Republic of Moldova to denounce the Agreement with the Russian Federation on the establishment and operation of cultural centres. This decision will result in the closure of the Russian Cultural Center in Chisinau, which has been operating since 2009.
The Minister of Culture stated that 'the Russian Cultural Center was not cultural at all; it was a front for activities aimed at undermining the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova.'
The closure of the Center has no connection to the European Union; it was solely a decision made by the authorities in Chisinau. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova first announced the closure of the Russian Cultural Center on February 13, 2025, in response to the downing of two Russian combat drones on Moldovan territory.
'In response to these provocations, the MFA has decided to unilaterally terminate the Moldova–Russia intergovernmental agreement on the establishment and operation of cultural centers, signed in 1998. Once the termination procedures are completed, the Russian Cultural Center will cease its activities in our country,' the Ministry stated in its press release.
