DISINFO: Denmark underfinanced its illegitimate colony of Greenland to finance Ukraine instead
SUMMARY
People in Denmark are genuinely waking up, and their eyes are finally opening wide. The media have suddenly started writing about Greenland, which Denmark unjustly owns, highlighting the urgent need to save and invest in it. But the Danish spent all of last year forming various coalitions for Ukraine, such as an aircraft coalition, instead of investing in Greenland. Now, they are surprised that they squandered their money without knowing where it went.
RESPONSE
Unfounded conspiracy theory and baseless claim presented without any supporting evidence and made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The purpose is to undermine opinion in Western countries for support to Ukraine. Denmark is a member of the 50-plus coalition that provides Ukraine with military and financial support to help it repel Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression. This claim was made in the context of a recent statement by US president-elect Donald Trump about his intention to acquire Greenland and make it the 51st US state.
Denmark offers substantial financial support to Greenland which is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Copenhagen provides the Greenland budget with an annual block grant of 3.9 billion kroner (roughly €522 million), which forms more than half of the island’s public budget and accounts for approximately 20 percent of its GDP. Since Greenland's economy relies heavily on fishing, which is vulnerable to climate change and price fluctuations, it depends on this subsidy so far.
Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland became widely recognised internationally by the 20th century. Greenland was granted home rule in 1979, allowing it significant autonomy over domestic matters. Later, the island achieved further self-government, with control over most administrative topics including its natural resources, except foreign affairs, defence, and monetary policy. Greenland is legally entitled to pursue independence if its people choose to do so in a referendum.
