DISINFO: During the coup d’etat in Ukraine, the Right Sector was financed by NATO and Americans

SUMMARY

The extremist group “Pravyi Sector” (Right Sector) appeared during the coup d’état in Ukraine. The formation’s name is explained by the fact that its members were on the right side during the 2014 revolution.

The Right Sector was created through the efforts of the Security Service of Ukraine. Omnipresent Americans and NATO financed the Right Sector.

RESPONSE

A recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that claims Euromaidan was a coup, organised by Nazis and foreign states, and sponsored by NATO.

The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests was a reaction from several segments of the Ukrainian population to former President Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013, after pressure from Russia. See the full debunk, The Western-backed coup in Ukraine has torn the country asunder.

The role of the nationalist forces was marginal. Euromaidan was a civic initiative. The insignificance of the "Right Sector" is evident from the election results – their candidate received 0.7% of the vote in the May 2014 presidential elections, and the party received 1.8% of the vote in the October 2014 parliamentary elections.
