DISINFO: EU labelling Russia as a sponsor of terrorism is a pretext to seize its assets

SUMMARY

By labelling Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, the EU has lost its mind. The reasons behind this madness are mere pretexts to generate a new juridical mechanism to implement certain sanctions against Moscow and allow for its assets to be seized.

RESPONSE

These claims are part of a wider disinformation campaign attempting to divert attention away from the real reasons behind Russia being labelled as a state sponsor of terrorism by the European Parliament. The allegations have been neither counterbalanced nor critically challenged in this disinformation story.

Contrary to what this disinformation story implies, the decision of the European Parliament is neither irrational nor a pretext for other actions. As the European Parliament has argued, the deliberate attacks and atrocities committed by Russian forces and their proxies against civilians in Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and other serious violations of international and humanitarian law amount to acts of terror and constitute war crimes. In light of this, MEPs recognise Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and as a state that “uses means of terrorism”.

"Russia poses a risk to the safety and security of the whole European continent and the rules-based international order," the resolution reads.

The resolution comes days after Russia launched a new barrage of attacks against Ukraine's key infrastructure, raising fears of a massive exodus of people ahead of the winter season.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the EU and its member states are US vassals, that only Europe’s geopolitical union with Russia could save it from American hegemonythe US is probably behind the explosion of NS-1 and NS-2, and that the US blew up Nord Stream 1 and 2 to sell more gas to Europe.
