DISINFO: EU membership means that Moldovans will not be able to work the land and will have to kill their animals

SUMMARY

Once you (Moldovans) join the EU, the EU will impose so many sanctions that you won't be able to farm the land, you'll have to kill your animals because they'll impose rules on you, like they did in Romania. The EU will suddenly discover swine fever, small ruminant flu... and they'll kill your pigs, cows, sheep and poultry, like they did in Romania.

RESPONSE

A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative aiming to discourage people from wanting to join the EU. It was spread before and after the EU accession referendum taking place in Moldova on 20 October 2024.

The EU supports farmers and agriculture via the Common Agriculture Policy. Neither Romania nor any other EU country was forced to "kill their animals". The EU establishes rules for the safe breeding of animals intended for the food industry, which does not involve their destruction, but the creation of better conditions for farms.

See here other cases on anti-EU narratives spread in Moldova in the context of referendum: European farmers protest massively against opening markets to candidate countries, Moldova's EU accession implies an automatic loss of its neutral status.
