DISINFO: EU showing its imperial desires by calling for an overthrow in Belarus

SUMMARY

Commission President von der Leyen has promised Belarusian civil society three billion euros if it implements democratic reforms. You could also call it an open call for an overthrow. Von der Leyen's statement went uncommented on in the German media in its scandalous brazenness that breaks all transnational rules. This is an open expression of imperial desires and a desire to expand the sphere of influence.

RESPONSE

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU and its members attempting to colonise other countries along with lost sovereignty and Belarus.

On 28 May 2021, the European Commission published its comprehensive plan of economic support for Belarus which is neither an "open call for overthrow", nor showing "open expressions for its imperial desires" as claimed in the article.

The plan, of up to €3 billion, reflects the European Union's commitment to supporting the Belarusian people's wishes for a peaceful democratic transition in the country following the Presidential elections of August 2020, which were neither free nor fair.

Once Belarus embarks on a democratic transition, the EU will activate the €3 billion package, a mix of grants and loans leveraging public and private investments, to help Belarus stabilise its economy, reform its institutions to make them more democratic and help increase the economy's resilience, growth potential and job creation.
