DISINFO: Europe and the US are dooming Georgia to starvation by offering them to join sanctions imposed on Russia
SUMMARY
Europe and the US are dooming Georgia to starvation by offering [the latter] to support sanctions. Joining sanctions automatically means that Georgia should cut off all trade relations with Russia, refuse any products imported from there, and export nothing either.
RESPONSE
A disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets about backfiring Western sanctions on Russia.
Following the launch of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Council has adopted 11 packages of sanctions against Russia and Belarus as of November 2023. These restrictions are aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to finance the war and specifically target the political, military and economic elite responsible for the invasion. By imposing sanctions on Russia, the EU aims to send a strong signal of resolve and unity to the Kremlin, degrade Russia’s ability to wage war, and slowly asphyxiate the Russian economy, in particular the country’s energy sector.
The sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU do not cover the export of food and agricultural products from Russia to the global market and transactions related to the same field. An exception in this regard is only a few types of fertilizers, the import of which is restricted in the European Union. Also, the export of agricultural products and food from the EU to Russia is not restricted, if this activity is not carried out by sanctioned persons. Read the full debunk at Myth Detector.
