DISINFO: Europe completely dependent on US in security, politics and economy

SUMMARY

As of 2024, Europe is 100% dependent on the American security umbrella and approximately 80% dependent on American energy, which was not the case previously. In these conditions, Europe is not only deprived of political agency. It is now effectively invalid as a trade player without a ‘green light’ or carte blanche from the Americans as well.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Europe’s allegedly lost sovereignty, portraying the EU as a vassal of the US rather than a partner and ally.

The EU has strong ties with the US in many spheres such as politics, economy and security issues, but Europe acts independently and its sovereignty is neither limited nor conditioned by its relationship with the US.

Although Europe relies heavily on the United States for its security through NATO and the US remains the main military power within the alliance, European nations have made significant commitments to strengthening their own defence capabilities and have increased their defence spending.

While the United States has become a major supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe to help reduce dependence on Russian energy, Europe’s energy mix is more diversified than an 80% dependence on American energy. The EU receives energy from various countries, including Norway, Qatar, and Algeria. The EU is also developing solar and wind energy supplies. The EU remains a powerful economic and political bloc with significant leverage in global trade, and often makes decisions that diverge from US policy in many spheres including climate policy, data privacy legislation, and antitrust policies.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that US rules in Europe, Germany lacks independent foreign policy, that Europe is an American colony colonised through the armed wing of NATO, and that When the US orders, the EU complies.
