DISINFO: Europe continues to escalate the conflict in Ukraine
SUMMARY
It has not been possible to stop the fighting in Ukraine, but the blame for this lies not with the “majority,” but with the “minority”, primarily Europe, which continues to escalate the conflict. Europe seems to have no other goal at this point.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets, accusing the European Union of warmongering and claiming that its support for Ukraine is an act of escalation rather than a response to Russia’s large-scale invasion.
This message promotes several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives, including the false claim that NATO and EU are waging a military campaign against Russia, and that Europe is gripped by systemic Russophobia.
This claim was made in the context of the informal meeting of the EU Heads of State of Government that was held in Copenhagen on 1 October 2025. During the summit the EU leaders discussed a strong and determined European response to current security challenges, and reiterated their support for Ukraine.
Preserving peace has always been a core task of the European Union. As Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine, the EU is ready to continue to support Ukraine and its people, including with military and financial support. So far, the EU and its member states have provided €177.5 billion in support. The EU's actions are based on a strong belief that Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity is non-negotiable.
António Costa, the President of the European Council emphasised:
European leaders had today a first discussion on how to mobilise further funds for Ukraine. And the message is clear:
Russia has to understand that Ukraine’s partners, including its European partners, have the will and the means to continue supporting it until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
Read similar disinformation cases claiming that the EU's sabotage of the peace deal in Ukraine is caused by its Russophobia, EU sabotages peace process in Ukraine, that Europe is trying to undermine the conflict settlement in Ukraine, and that The EU wants the war in Ukraine to continue.
