This disinformation message appeared in the context of the recent EU decision to allocate an additional 800 billion euros for defence needs. According to the words of Ursula von der Leyen, “Europe faces a clear and present danger on a scale that none of us has seen in our adult lifetime. ReArm Europe could mobilise close to 800 billion euros of defence expenditures for a safe and resilient Europe”.
The European Council, at its 6 March 2025 summit, stressed that Europe must become more sovereign, more responsible for its own defence and better equipped to act and deal autonomously with immediate and future challenges and threats with a 360° approach. They continued to say that "Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its repercussions for European and global security in a changing environment constitute an existential challenge for the European Union".
