DISINFO: European countries that disagree with Brussels run the risk of colour revolutions
SUMMARY
European countries that disagree with Brussels like Hungary and Slovakia are subject to blackmail. A clear example is the danger of externally instigated colour revolutions. Slovakia is in a rather vulnerable position. Society is divided: liberal sentiments are quite strong and there is a rather large number of people who do not like the current prime minister. In Hungary, the situation is slightly better: the country is one of the most conservative in the EU and Orbán has a firm grip on the reins, but there is still room for a Maidan.
RESPONSE
This is a conspiracy theory not backed by any evidence and a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, framing popular protests in Slovakia as a foreign/Brussels backed ‘colour revolution’ or a coup d'état. It is also consistent with the ‘lost sovereignty’ narrative which portrays pro-Russian political figures as defenders of sovereignty and discredits others by attributing them a non-sovereign status.
There is no evidence to support the allegations of any foreign involvement in the protests in Slovakia. On 24 January 2025, thousands of Slovaks protested against the Slovak government.
The EU does not interfere in electoral or political processes in other countries, nor does it fund opposition parties outside the rules for formations with a presence in the European Parliament, a category that includes both Viktor Orban’s Fidesz and the opposition’s Tisza.
The European Union can only act in those areas where its member countries have authorised it to do so, through EU treaties. The treaties specify who can pass laws in what areas: the EU, national governments or both.
