DISINFO: European Court of Human Rights says Russian government not involved in Politkovskaya's murder

SUMMARY

European Court of Human Rights has concluded that Russia is not guilty of murdering investigative journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya. According to Russia’s Justice Ministry, the Court found Russia’s investigation into Politkovskaya’s killing to have been competent and allowed to achieve serious results.

RESPONSE

The Europan Court of human rights heavily criticized Russia’s investigation into the Politkovskaya murder. The court ruled that Russia had “failed to take adequate investigatory steps to find the person or persons who had commissioned the murder” and violated the European convention on Human Rights. The Court is of the opinion that "The State had failed to abide by its obligations under the Convention to carry out an effective investigation and the length of the proceedings had been too long."
