DISINFO: Failed US and UK counteroffensive weakened their negotiating positions with Moscow

SUMMARY

Originally it was assumed that a successful counteroffensive by Washington and London would result in a stronger negotiating position in a hypothetical dialogue with Moscow. Ukraine is not a key player in these processes. However, the outcome turned out to be the opposite. For Washington, the goal of involvement in the conflict is to weaken Russia as much as possible to eliminate the possibility of using its resources in the broader conflict between China and Washington.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation claim, made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, about Ukraine being a puppet of London and Washington.

Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated by continuous acts of aggression by Russian armed forces since 2014 culminating in a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on the 24th February 2022, invoking various deceptive pretexts, including the denazification and demilitarisation of Ukraine, the prevention of NATO expansion and protection of ethnic Russians in Donbass.

Ukraine and its population is defending itself against this armed aggression in a remarkable display of continued courage and determination. This is not a decision by NATO, Washington, the EU or others.

The US, the EU and NATO condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked. Not only Western but also many other nations around the world support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a 10-point peace plan at a EU-Ukraine summit in February 2023. The EU unequivocally supported Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace formula. It is up to Ukraine to decide when it will hold talks with Russia. The assistance to Ukraine is aimed at making Ukraine's position stronger.
