DISINFO: France colonizes Romania and prepares it for war with Russia
SUMMARY
If the pro-European, pro-Ukrainian government in Romania falls, the main route through which weapons are supplied to Odessa and to southern Ukraine in general will be blocked, and this would pose a serious problem for France.
Thus, European liberal elites, with the help of France, are preparing to establish an anti-Russian bridge in Romania, clearly anticipating the success of the Russian special operation, which will then lead Ukraine, one way or another, to change its anti-Russian political course, and NATO's southeastern border will become a dividing line of influence between Russia and Europe. For this reason, one of the EU's major military powers—France—is preparing Romania for a future military confrontation.
RESPONSE
This is a pro-Kremlin recurring disinformation narrative about the politics of Romania being under external control through election manipulation. The claim is a conspiracy theory that promotes geopolitical fearmongering portraying Romania as a puppet state under French control, and as a future battleground between NATO and Russia.
The suggestion that Romania is under French control is baseless and deeply misleading. Romania is a sovereign country, and as member of the EU and NATO, it participates in multilateral decision-making frameworks, and is not forcibly subjected to them. Describing a democratically elected government as a puppet is also a recurring pro-Kremlin attempt to cast doubts on the legitimacy of democratic institutions and the will of its electorate when it does not suit its geopolitical ambitions.
Ultimately, the narrative attempts to portray Russia's full-scale invasion against Ukraine as part of a broader Russia-NATO conflict. In fact, the choice of pro-Europe candidates is a direct response by the electorate to Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine, and its repeated violation of international law and established principles of sovereignty. 87.5% of Romanians believe that the EU, US, and NATO is the direction Romania should follow in terms of political and military alliances. Only 4.1% believe that Romania should orient itself toward the East (i.e. Russia, China).
