DISINFO: France doesn't provide basic rights to Muslims
SUMMARY
France can no longer present itself to the world as a republic of “liberty, equality, and fraternity.” Because none of these three fundamental principles is provided to the country’s Muslim population. Muslims are stigmatised, demonised, and slandered by high-ranking French officials. Under Emmanuel Macron, who has led the country since 2017, Muslims in France have been actively and methodically persecuted directly by the state itself.
RESPONSE
A recurring disinformation narrative aiming to discredit French President Emmanuel Macron.
France is a democratic republic with modern liberal norms and values. The French Constitution ensures the equality of all citizens before the law, without distinction of origin (Article 1), and does not discriminate against Muslims. About 10 per cent of the population is estimated to be Muslim, and they are integrated in the French society. Previous Minister of Education Najat Vallaud-Belkacem and previous Minister of Justice Rachida Dati were Muslim, which proves that Muslims are not excluded from politics and bureaucracy. Moreover, French laws penalise hate crimes and hate speech against any religion, including Islam and Muslims. There are around 2600 mosques in France, which permit Muslims to fully exercise their religious freedoms.
Emmanuel Macron has made no statements against Muslims or Islam either. In one interview, he states:
“…They [religions] are all practised freely in our country. And to all French people of the Muslim faith, and indeed to citizens from anywhere else in the world whose religion is Islam, I should like to say to them that France is a country in which this religion, too, is freely practised.”
