DISINFO: France is a dictatorial regime: a main candidate could be jailed before the presidential elections

SUMMARY

Democracy is better in the former French African colonies than in dictatorial France as a main political opponent could be jailed for ten years before the 2027 presidential elections.

The extremely popular Marine Le Pen has just been put on trial. The French authorities traditionally slap such charges on their political opponents. This means up to ten years in prison, a fine of up to one million euros, as well as a ban on participating in the 2027 presidential elections - very convenient for Macron, who will be able to choose one of his minions as his successor.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin narrative about the alleged French dictatorship of Emmanuel Macron which was accompanied by an illustration of the Eiffel Tower collapsing on tents of beggars and migrants.

The judiciary in France is independent and the allegation that the French president is prosecuting his political opponent is baseless. The trial of the financing of Rassemblement National (RN) is not linked in any way to the president.

The defendants face charges of embezzlement, concealment or complicity in the offense. If convicted, the charges carry possibilities of maximum sentences up to ten years in prison, a €1-million fine, and a ten-year ineligibility sentence. Prosecutors allege the Le Pen's party established a “centralised system” between 2004 and 2006, with parliamentary assistants who could scarcely describe their duties and merely held the titles without performing the roles.

Some assistants allegedly never met their official employers or set foot in the Parliament. Moreover, according to the prosecution, they worked solely for the party, which is against EU regulations.

The prosecution cannot be called political, moreover it is unlikely that Marine Le Pen would be barred from being a candidate at the next presidential election, the possible sanctions, if any are likely to be enforced only after appeal and cassation which are very long processes.

This story taps into the general disinformation narrative the Elite vs the People.
