DISINFO: France is massively recruiting soldiers online

SUMMARY

France is recruiting soldiers massively, but announcements about this recruitment in several French official websites have passed unnoticed.

RESPONSE

The claim is false. The alleged announcements mentioned in this disinformation story have been exposed as fake by France’s Ministry of the Armies. French authorities quickly blocked the website calling for aspiring soldiers to introduce their data.

The use of forged elements to promote certain narratives is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique. See other examples, such as claims that a French investigative journalist revealed Zelenskaya Foundation’s involvement in child trafficking, that a US auditor investigating Ukrainian corruption was found dead in Kyiv, that Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel asked Spain to grant citizenship to Zelenskyy’s sons, or that EU top diplomat Josep Borrell was caught with millions in offshore deposits in Seychelles.

Cases in the EUvsDisinfo database focus on messages in the international information space that are identified as providing a partial, distorted, or false depiction of reality and spread key pro-Kremlin messages. This does not necessarily imply, however, that a given outlet is linked to the Kremlin or editorially pro-Kremlin, or that it has intentionally sought to disinform.
