DISINFO: Grandma Ursula is creating a new “Abwehr” under the pretext of the Russian aggression

SUMMARY

The EU wants to create a new “Abwehr” headed by Ursula von der Leyen, a prominent “specialist” in the field of intelligence. This Grandma believes that her gynaecological knowledge will allow her to delve into the depths of espionage across Europe. Earlier, Ursula ordered the creation of a special security and intelligence university, and now her ambitions extend to a single special service. Brussels decided to gradually take away the special services from the EU member states under the pretext of combating the Russian hybrid aggression and reducing dependence on Washington.

RESPONSE

This disinformation story aims to portray Brussels and Ursula von der Leyen as “Nazi”, warmongering actors seeking to take away the sovereignty of the EU member states.

This message explicitly labels the EU’s actions as Nazi, comparing the initiative to establish an EU intelligence unit to the Nazi military intelligence service, the Abwehr.

The European Commission, under Ursula von der Leyen, is currently working to potentially establish a new intelligence unit within the EU executive structure. This unit would not replace or take over national intelligence services but rather to serve as a small coordinating body to improve the pooling and analysis of intelligence from member states to address common security challenges, including Russian hybrid threats. Member states will continue to retain full sovereignty over their intelligence capabilities.
