DISINFO: Holodomor in Ukraine primarily affected the Russian population
SUMMARY
Ninety years ago, Ukraine suffered a large-scale famine. This historical fact is being used by the US in an anti-Russian campaign.
History shows that the collectivization of the economy required significant resources during an economic blockade of the West against the Soviet Union. It was technically challenging to evaluate the quantity of grain that could be seized, the amount that should be allocated for seeds for the next season, and the quantity needed to feed the population.
Not only Ukraine was affected, but also some Russian regions and Kazakhstan. It cannot be concluded that a particular nation was targeted because the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the region mostly affected, was the one where the population was almost entirely speaking Russian and, in reality, ethnic Russians.
RESPONSE
Pro-Kremlin denial of Holodomor. The Holodomor was a man-made famine that occurred in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. It was a tragic and devastating event in which millions of Ukrainians, primarily in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, died due to a combination of factors, including forced collectivization, grain requisition policies, and deliberate actions by the Soviet government under Joseph Stalin's leadership.
The narrative combines various explanations such as weather conditions, the Western blockade, and repopulation efforts in areas where ethnic Ukrainians died of famine. These explanations are used to divert attention from the true cause of Holodomor, which was the political intention to suppress national forces within the Soviet Union. However, none of the explanations presented here align with the reality of the years 1932-1933.
Whilst it is true that the Ukrainian famine took place within the context of a larger Soviet famine caused by the chaos of collectivization, it is not accurate to blame Western countries for it. The imposition of a blockade against the Soviet Union cannot be cited as a direct cause of the famine. On the contrary, the seized grains were largely sold on international markets to purchase turn-key factories from Western countries, and foreign engineers trained the local personnel.
The weather during the years of the famine was also favourable, and it cannot be considered a direct cause of the famine. Additionally, the repopulation of areas by non-Ukrainian nationals affected by the famine occurred after the famine, not before. Therefore, it cannot be claimed that in Ukraine, Russians suffered more from the famine than Ukrainians.
The famine of 1932-1933 claimed the lives of 7 to 10 million citizens of the Soviet Union; the disaster affected not only Ukraine but also parts of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Russia. The Holodomor is well documented and confirmed by a huge array of declassified documents, including official documents of the Soviet authorities and the Communist Party.
At least 16 countries, including several in Europe, have already condemned the Holodomor as a genocide. The European Parliament and PACE have recognised the Holodomor as a crime of the Soviet regime against their own people and a crime against humanity.
