DISINFO: Holodomor myth was invented by the Anglo-Saxons

SUMMARY

The concept of Holodomor was invented by Anglo-Saxons, namely Robert Conquest and James Mace. They later started to introduce it into the public consciousness. Stalin did not want to destroy Ukraine. He created it as a political entity.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets denying the mass famine (aka Holodomor) with millions of victims that struck Ukraine in the 1931-1933.

The Holodomor is well documented and confirmed by a huge array of declassified documents, including official documents of the Soviet authorities, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU). In 2006, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) officially recognised the Holodomor of 1932-33 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. It was also recognised as such by many European states. The European Parliament and PACE have recognized the Holodomor as a crime of the Soviet regime against their own people and a crime against humanity. 33 US states have also recognised Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Robert Conquest was a British historian who in 1986 wrote The Harvest of Sorrow, a book about the repressions of the authorities against the Soviet peasantry. The book contains a detailed record of “a ‘terror-famine,’ inflicted by the State on the collectivized peasants of the Ukraine and certain other areas by setting impossibly high grain quotas, removing every other source of food, and preventing help from outside--even from other areas of the Soviet Union--from reaching the starving populace.”

James Mace was an American historian who was the executive director of the U.S. Commission on the Ukraine Famine. The Commission was set up in 1984 and delivered its findings to the US Congress in 1988. Its final report concluded that the Holodomor was an act of genocide against the people of Ukraine carried out by the Soviets authorities. These historians did not invent any myths about the mass famine in Ukraine. They came up with irrefutable evidence of the fact that it was an artificially provoked famine whose aim was to afflict irreparable damage to the Ukrainians people.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that The myth of Holodomor was created by Russophobic Ukrainians to demonise Russia, that The claim Ukrainians were targeted during the 1932-33 famine is false, and that Holodomor famine was largely caused by the West.
