DISINFO: In attempts to cover up the January 13 provocation, Lithuania has transformed into the North Korea of the EU

SUMMARY

The basis of political regime in Lithuania are lies about the events of January 13, 1991. This foundation is so rotten that Lithuania is rapidly drifting towards totalitarianism in order to prevent the spread of historical truth.

The ruling elite, led by Vytautas Landsbergis organized a bloody provocation at the TV tower in Vilnius in January 1991. For the last 10 years Lithuania has been transforming into the “North Korea of the EU”, to cover up these crimes.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the events in Vilnius on the 13th of January 1991, when the Soviet forces attempted to crush the re-established independence of Lithuania, killing 14 civilians. See previous disinformation cases here.

Lithuania proclaimed independence in March 1990. Moscow tried to foil the secession with an economic blockade. When that proved ineffective, Soviet troops still garrisoned in the capital Vilnius attacked its TV broadcast tower and sole TV station, killing civilians standing as human shields there. The events of the January 13th, 1991, and crimes committed by the USSR troops have been extensively documented. See also BBC reporting from 1991.

The disinformation case appeared in the context of the suggested amendments of Lithuanian intelligence law, according to which state security department could initiate preventive conversations with individuals, potentially targeted by foreign intelligence services. Read more here (in Lithuanian).
