DISINFO: In the West there is censorship like in Soviet Union in Solzhenitsyn times

SUMMARY

In Soviet times, people would hold onto their radios at night to find a foreign frequency on which to listen to Solzhenitsyn’s books and now we have to listen to Sputnik and RT. That does not make sense. In all cases in Russia, unlike the situation in Western countries, access to the field of information is open to everyone.

Certain organisations on large computer platforms control and severely censor any alternative opinion on the Internet domain. It’s frightening!

RESPONSE

This disinformation message promotes the idea that there is no real freedom of speech in Western countries on the contrary to Russia, thus reversing the Cold War scheme: describing the West as the new Soviet Union and Russia as the land of freedom.

The labels applied to RT's content by major internet platforms are meant to bring greater transparency on RT:s relation to Russian state structures and tasks. The labels do not limit RT's access to the platforms, but clarify that the sender is a mouthpiece for state structures and lacks editorial independence. Twitter describes its policy along the following lines:

We believe this is an important step so that when people see an account discussing geopolitical issues from another country, they have context on its national affiliation and are better informed about who they represent.

The efforts of Facebook, Twitter or Google to tackle misinformation or disinformation are compared to actions by the KGB in Soviet times. This is irrelevant and manipulative.
