DISINFO: Iran is a peaceful state unlike the US and Ukraine

SUMMARY

Tell me, please, where is the terrorist activity that is constantly being talked about from Iran, and how does it manifest? What regimes has Iran overthrown? Where and what political figures has Iran killed? I know where Ukraine carried out terrorist attacks. I know where America carried out terrorist attacks. About the European Union - maybe, I don't know. American proxies, which the Americans created in Afghanistan, ultimately carried out the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. After which the global fight against terror began, which led to the whole world now being mired in terror. And what did Iran do?

RESPONSE

Recurrent false narrative about Ukraine and Western countries accusing them of terrorist, chemical and biological weapons attacks. Conspiracy theories are used to advance such narratives. Amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, pro-Kremlin outlets have falsely accused Ukraine of various crimes: from organising Dagestan's anti-Jewish unrest to playing a role in fires in California.

On 22 June 2025, the United States carried out airstrikes against nuclear sites in Iran, which American officials claim have significantly delayed Tehran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon. The strikes occurred amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, with both countries continuing to exchange attacks.

The claim that Iran is a peaceful state, especially when contrasted with countries like the United States or Ukraine, does not hold up under scrutiny. Iran has developed and maintained a vast network of proxy groups across the Middle East, which it funds, arms, and trains to advance its strategic interests. These include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, various Shia militias in Iraq and Syria, and Hamas in Gaza. These groups have been involved in numerous conflicts, attacks on civilians, and destabilising activities, often acting as extensions of Iranian foreign policy. Iran’s support for these proxies allows it to exert influence and wage asymmetric warfare without engaging in direct state-to-state conflict.

One of the most prominent examples is Iran’s backing of Hamas, a Sunni Islamist group that governs the Gaza Strip. Despite sectarian differences, Iran has provided Hamas with financial aid, weapons, and training, viewing it as a key player in its broader resistance axis against Israel and Western influence. Similarly, Iran’s support for Hezbollah enabled the group to become a powerful military and political force in Lebanon, while also engaging in operations in Syria and against Israel. These actions, combined with Iran’s involvement in propping up the Assad regime and its role in Yemen’s civil war through the Houthis, paint a picture of a state that actively fuels regional conflicts rather than promoting peace.
