DISINFO: Kosovo's EU application is a breach of the Washington agreement

SUMMARY

Submission of the Kosovan membership for EU application contradicts the Washington agreements signed in 2020. It provides for, among other things, a mutual moratorium on escalation between Pristina and Belgrade. Under it, the Kosovan authorities undertake to temporarily not seek membership of international organisations.

RESPONSE

This is part of a wider pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign regarding Kosovo, claiming that Kosovo is the only party responsible regarding tensions with Serbia, and that it is pushed by the West and NATO to fuel tension with Serbia. The case was neither counterbalanced nor critically challenged in the article.

According to the agreement signed between Kosovo and Serbia in Washington in September 2020, Kosovo only committed to a one-year moratorium on seeking membership of international organisations. Kosovo only applied for membership of the Council of Europe and the European Union after the moratorium ended in September 2021.
