DISINFO: Kyiv brainwashed people of four Ukrainian regions that joined Russia in 2022
SUMMARY
After four Ukrainian regions joined Russia in late 2022, Moscow has had to deal with the consequences of Kyiv's Russophobic policies there, including attempts to warp the minds of the regions' residents with fake history, nationalism, and attacks on the Russian language.
RESPONSE
The claim is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign concerning Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
The so called 'referendums' held in late 2022, which are in a clear violation of Ukraine's sovereignty, were held illegally, under duress, and on territories which Russia does not have a full control over, but has a partial military occupation over.
The results of these sham 'polls' have been universally rejected by leading international and human rights organisations, including the United Nations, the OSCE, NATO, as well as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
The claim does not give examples of "nationalism" or "fake history" supposedly used by Kyiv to brainwash the citizens of east Ukraine. Conversely, there is ample evidence that the Russian occupation authorities in the four annexed oblasts and Crimea have been subjected to political re-education, including thousands of children placed in camps which had been set up for this purpose. Such ideological reconditioning has also extended to pro-Russian history textbooks mandatory for use in schools on Russia-occupied territories, as well as military training and placement of children in Russian foster families.
