DISINFO: Lithuania could be held accountable for cyber-attacks on Russian elections

SUMMARY

Lithuania could be held accountable for cyber-attacks on the remote electronic voting system of elections to the Russian parliament.

RESPONSE

The narrative is linked to the recent elections to the Russian parliament (Duma). A case of manipulation using misleading titles.

Baltnews.lt published an article about cyber-attacks on the remote electronic voting system of elections to Russian Duma. The article has two titles: “The cyber-attacks on elections from Lithuania will not go unanswered” (on the main page) and “Lithuania could get retaliation for attacks on the remote electronic voting system”. The content of the article mismatch both titles.

The article states that IP addresses of cyber-attacks against the remote electronic voting system of elections to the Russian parliament were from different countries in the World, mostly from the US (50%) and Germany (25%). It is recognised that the rest of the IP addresses of infected devices came from many different countries, amongst which Lithuania is listed as well.
