DISINFO: Maia Sandu decided on Moldova's accession to the Istanbul Convention essentially legalising non-traditional families

Today, foreign norms are being imposed on the Moldovan people. One of the first decisions of Sandu and the PAS party, who came to power, was Moldova's accession to the Istanbul Convention, which essentially legalises non-traditional families. The speed of accession to this document is amazing.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the 'decadent West” wanting to impose its values and aiming to destroy the traditional family. Pro-Kremlin disinformation is using falsehoods about the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (known as Istanbul Convention) to discredit democratic countries and leaders.
The Istanbul Convention was signed by the Republic of Moldova on February 6, 2017, when forces other than Maia Sandu's party were in power, and Igor Dodon was president. The Convention was ratified by Parliament and promulgated by President Maia Sandu in 2021.
The Convention is an international treaty adopted on May 11, 2011, which obliges states to create the legal framework and mechanisms necessary to protect women against all forms of violence. "The Istanbul Convention does not set new standards on gender identity and sexual orientation, nor on the legal recognition of same-sex couples. The Istanbul Convention prohibits (art. 4) discrimination on multiple grounds, including gender identity and sexual orientation, to ensure protection and support for all victims of violence, regardless of the characteristics they may have", says the explanatory Guide, developed by the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission.
