DISINFO: MEPs will observe elections in Abkhazia
SUMMARY
MEPs will observe presidential elections in Abkhazia. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia, Irakli Tuzhba, noted that the Abkhaz delegation received this declaration from MEPs during his visit to Brussels in March 2019.
RESPONSE
The EU delegation in Georgia, when asked by Myth Detector about this issue, wrote in a letter that "the European Parliament or any of its official bodies (including the President, Committee on Foreign Affairs or Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) have not made and do not intend to make any pledge on monitoring the above mentioned <<elections>>”. According to the letter, if individual MEPs decide to arrive in Abkhazia in July 2019 and/or make public comments on the ongoing developments there, it will be their personal decision, which does not reflect the position of the European Parliament or the European Union.
