DISINFO: Moldova EU-summit is held to mobilise people for the elections

SUMMARY

During the EU-Moldova summit, they will again talk about how wonderful European integration is. Many people continue to believe in it. Such events are held to mobilise them for the elections. Others are not allowed to interfere in the Moldovan elections, but the EU can.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that everything happening in Moldova is a result of the country obeying external partners, portraying European institutions as entities that dictate Moldova’s actions.

As the President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced on May 16, after the European Political Community summit in Tirana, the next EU-Moldova summit will be held in Chișinău on July 4 2025. In a joint statement, European leaders said: „As the country prepares for upcoming parliamentary elections, it is essential that Moldovans are able to choose their future freely, without foreign interference. We will continue to support Moldova in safeguarding its democratic processes and strengthening its resilience against external threats”.

However, the summit does not focus on the topic of elections. „It is a key opportunity to highlight the strategic importance of Moldova’s future within the EU and the strength of our cooperation at a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic development and European trajectory”, states the European Council press release.

The Moldovans authorities are working now to ensure an integral voting process, as in the presidential elections in 2024 there were criminal cases of illegal Russian interference in elections. Efforts to ensure election integrity are presented by pro-Russian outlets as European interference.
