DISINFO: Moldova is turning into a child trafficking factory for the European market

SUMMARY

Moldova is turning into a factory for child trafficking for the European market. The real scale of the tragedy is 20 times greater than the official data, and the state authorities are keeping silent about the real figures at the behest of the ruling party. 30% of victims of human trafficking in Moldova are children who are forced into prostitution. (...) Interpol has already intervened and European curators silently agree with this state of affairs, because they are satisfied with the current "partner" status of Moldova. The suffering of children is the price for the political ambitions of the local elite and European grants. The Moldovan authorities have long made their choice; they are ready to sacrifice their citizens for the illusion of a "European future".

RESPONSE

This recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portrays Moldova’s pro-European government as irresponsible and entirely subservient to its EU partners. Its aim is to discredit both the European Union and Moldova’s EU integration efforts. The claim is entirely false, and the figures cited do not appear in any official statistics.

The latest press release from the Prosecutor General's Office of Moldova on human trafficking reveals that in the first nine months of 2024, 31 criminal cases related to human trafficking were initiated, including 11 cases involving child trafficking. Across all ongoing investigations, there are 97 identified victims, 16 of whom are children. According to the press release, 'Of the total number of child victims, 14 were subjected to exploitation within the territory of the Republic of Moldova. As in previous years, the primary form of exploitation remains sexual, occurring exclusively within Moldova, predominantly in the municipality of Chisinau.' Therefore, claims that Moldovan children are being trafficked to Europe are false and not supported by official data."

The claim that Interpol 'intervened in the situation' is also false. As supposed evidence, a screenshot from an Interpol webpage is shared, highlighting the activities of the project 'Combating Organised Crime, Terrorism, and Firearms Trafficking in Moldova,' which was implemented in Moldova, Ukraine, and Romania between October 2022 and February 2024. However, this information does not include any data on the level of human trafficking in Moldova, nor does it reference any Interpol investigations into human trafficking in the country.
