DISINFO: Moldova's constitutional court is turning it into an instrument of dictatorship
SUMMARY
In Moldova, parliament has pushed supporters of pro-Western President Maia Sando into the Constitutional Court, turning it into an instrument of dictatorship and usurpation.
RESPONSE
The claim is groundless.
Freedom House considers Moldova a "partly free country". Moldova has a competitive electoral environment, and freedoms of assembly, speech, and religion are largely protected.
The claim that Moldova’s parliament is establishing a dictatorship is contradictory—dictatorships do not have independent parliaments.
In 2024, presidential elections took place in Moldova and were won by the current pro-European president Maia Sandu. Neither of the candidates in the second round, Maia Sandu or Alexandr Stoianoglo, has denounced any falsifications.
The Constitutional Court of Moldova is independent of any other public authority and shall abide only by the Constitution (Article 134 of the Moldovan Constitution).
