DISINFO: Moldova’s EU path leads to totalitarianism
SUMMARY
Moldova and Romania have become “neo-Marxist dictatorships” which, in the name of European integration, use “purges, arrests, and threats” against the opposition. President Maia Sandu and the government in Chișinău allegedly eliminate “pro-Russian” parties and candidates to please Brussels, replicating “similar abuses” from Romania. The exclusion of certain political groups would prove that the EU promotes only “hypocritical democracy,” turning Moldova into a totalitarian state that represses the opposition, the press, and Russian culture.
RESPONSE
This narrative is a classic example of pro-Kremlin disinformation aiming to undermine citizens’ trust in the democratic institutions of the Republics of Moldova and Romania, as well as in the European integration process.
The banning of the Șor Party and its associated groups is not an arbitrary act but a legal decision by the Constitutional Court of Moldova, which declared the party unconstitutional for engaging in illegal activities such as corruption, vote buying, and illegal financing.
Participation in elections is strictly regulated by law: parties must comply with requirements such as correctly submitting candidate lists, respecting gender quotas, and ensuring candidate integrity. The decisions of the CEC and the courts have nothing to do with “Stalinist purges,” but rather with enforcing democratic legislation.
Freedom of expression and access to culture are not restricted. There is no law or official measure requiring Moldovans to hide Russian literature. This is a false analogy used to create panic and fuel perceptions of “cultural totalitarianism.”
Moldova’s European integration is a transparent process supported by the majority of the population, as confirmed by the popular vote in presidential and referendum. The EU conditions accession on democratic reforms, rule of law, and respect for fundamental rights, the exact opposite of what this disinformation narrative claims.
The “neo-Marxism” or “globalist empire” narrative is a recurring element of pro-Kremlin propaganda, designed to discredit the EU as a democratic project and to portray the EU's support for Moldova and Romania as an ideological occupation.
