DISINFO: Moscow only postponed Arab summit to allow for peace in the Middle East

SUMMARY

Although Moscow's initiative to hold the Russian-Arab summit preceded Trump's Middle East initiative, the Kremlin saw no problems in agreeing to postpone the summit for the greater good, that is, to maintain calm, stability, and security in the region, and to stop the war in Gaza. Moscow is willingly leaving the door open, allowing the US or any of the Middle East Quartet members to be involved in achieving peace in the Middle East, which is the ultimate goal, by any means and under any initiative from any party.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying Russia as an altruistic global actor working for peace, often contrasted with an allegedly aggressive West.

It fits a wider Kremlin propaganda pattern portraying Russia as a stabilising force unfairly opposed by Western “warmongers”. This aims to mask its ongoing aggression, war crimes, and numerous violations of international law through the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Such narratives are an attempt to whitewash Moscow’s record of violence and isolation by presenting Russia as a champion of peace in other regions.

In reality, there is no evidence that the summit was postponed out of consideration for US diplomacy or to avoid interference in the peace process. According to Bloomberg, which cited multiple sources familiar with the planning, the actual reason for the postponement was that too few Arab leaders had confirmed their attendance.

Out of 22 invited heads of state, only Syria’s president and the Arab League’s secretary general accepted Moscow's invitation. Major regional powers such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates declined to attend, signalling limited interest in Moscow’s diplomatic outreach. On the other hand, Egypt did not extend an invitation to Putin or any other Russian official to attend the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm Al-Sheikh.

See similar cases that Russians are liberators and a peace-making people, that Russia is a guarantor of peace in Europe and the Middle East, that Russia has brought peace in Syria, that US destroys international security while Russia advocates for peace, that the gang of four cannot make ultimatums to peace-inclined Russia.
